The Food Stamp Program provides monthly benefits that help eligible low-income households buy the food they need for good health. For most households, Food Stamp benefits account for only a portion of their food budgets; they must also use their own funds to buy enough food to last throughout the month. The Family Independence Temporary Assistance Program (FITAP) is a public assistance program which provides financial aid for children in their own homes who are in need because they do not have sufficient finacial support from parents. The overall goal of FITAP is to decrease the long term dependency on welfare assistance by promoting job preparation and work. Public assistance is no longer a lifetime benefit but an opportunity to become independent after a financial crisis. The Department of Social Services, Office of Family Support implemented Louisiana's Kinship Care Subsidy Program (KCSP) on March 1, 2000. This program is funded by Louisiana's Temporary Assistance to Needy Families Block Grant and was implemented as a result of Legislation passed during the 1999 Louisiana State Legislative Session. KCSP provides cash assistance of $280 per month for each eligible child who resides with a qualified relative other than a parent. If you or someone you know is not ready to take care of a newborn baby and chooses not to utilize a licensed adoption agency, Louisiana's Safe Haven Law offers parents a safe, legal option. Parents who are unable to care for their newborns can bring the baby up to 30 days old to an emergency designated facility, or Safe Haven. By leaving the baby in the care of an employee at a Safe Haven facility, parents can give up custody of their baby with no questions asked.
